German-Lithuanian in Contrast. State of the Art and Perspectives of Research

Summary/Abstract: The term comparative linguistics in modern linguistics is used as a term which unifies all linguistic branches comparing different languages for different aims to find out their similarities and differences. Currently there are distinguished the following branches of comparative linguistics: comparative historical linguistics, language typology, research of language universals, contrastive linguistics, areal linguistics, linguistics of language contacts, eurolinguistics. In the introductory part of the article the place of contrastive linguistics in comparative studies and the relation of contrastive linguistics to cognate disciplines, especially language typology, are discussed in detail. The article follows commonly accepted tradition when contrastive linguistics is seen as an independent theoretical linguistics, which complements typological researches of languages by juxtaposing two or more languages. The article also deals with the overview of contrastive research of the German and Lithuanian languages and presents possible contrastive research of the German and Lithuanian languages as well as perspectives of research by juxtaposing languages in terms of grammar, lexis, discourse and intercultural dimensions
