MIGRATIONS IN THE EYES OF A CLASSIC

Summary/Abstract: An adequate approach to migration as a social phenomenon was suggested by Józef Chałasiński in 1936. His idea to make an analysis of migrants as members of a definite group, not as separate individuals, proves right referring to Polish labour migrations. They represented 150 years ago and they still represent quite a different pattern of migration than the one which is specific to western countries. What matters is their temporariness, keeping group bonds, and the lack of modernization effect.
