Didactic System of the Module “Professional Language“

Summary/Abstract: During 2000-2003 Kaunas University of Medicine, Department of Languages and Education reorganized language teaching and formed a compulsory module “Professional Language”. The aim of this article is to analyze the factors that influence the changes in the didactic system of the module “Professional Language”. The study is based on the methodological concepts of the humanistic education and the paradigm of learning, the principles of communication-based learning, and the methodology of the coordination of the linguistic, management, and educational theories. The method of the study is observation, analysis of theoretical literature, and a case study. The created module evaluation system fully complies with the main principles of criteria-based evaluation. The specificity of this evaluation system is two levels of evaluation, creating more possibilities for gathering objective information on the achievements of studies, and facilitating the result-related decision-making. This evaluation system has features that motivate studies and increase their efficiency: it stimulates the students’ continuous interest in their studies, including planning, organization, and striving for the maximum evaluation of their achievements, as well as helps to create an objective and impartial psychological climate, thus facilitating the studying process an increasing its attractiveness.
