Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to reveal some characteristics of the firms’ market behavior in Bulgaria under the wide scope institutional change after 1989. The analysis is based on empirical data that were gathered in the late 2001 in 205 food-processing enterprises2 from eleven sectors. The major selection criterion was enterprises’ actual and long-term presence on the market and their active associations memberships. In that sense the research is not representative of all registered firms in this economic sector but only of those, which are associations members and are relatively well established on the market. Our subjects were the managing personnel of these firms and they were surveyed with a standardized questionnaire. The main conclusion is that there is a strong discrepancy between the use of modern market practices and the final economic results. It reflects directly on the type of market economy, which is under creation in the post-communist countries
