ROMANIAN OLD BOOKS FROM LANCRAM. CONSERVATIONAL ISSUES

Summary/Abstract: The old books signaled in Lancram had a significant role both through spiritual sent message and their exterior beauty, by the care shown to the binding and paper quality. Few in number, the volumes which are to be found in church suffered numerous degradations, both from internal causes, generated by the organic nature of the support material, and from external causes, determined by the surrounding environment, under the circumstances of exceeding optimal limits of pollution, microbiological activity but also careless usage. Consequence of action of physical-mechanic, physical-chemical and biological factors, within an environment with instable microclimate, these books present different forms of deterioration, present both in the body of the book and binding elements. Their deterioration is explicable by the fact that they stayed a long time in the church, where humidity and absence of light dominated, all being accentuated by natural ageing and functional usage.
