Summary/Abstract: Access to information, particularly government-held information - is “the oxygen of democracy”. Freedom of information laws provide an essential means of engagement for all those directly or indirectly affected by government policy. In the midst of the debate around the draft-law for free access to information, the author of this article gives a chronological overview of the development of the regulative for freedom of information and access to information of public interest, but also compares the experiences of the EU countries with those of Macedonia. At the end, besides the very relevant conclusions, she gives recommendations for undertaking additional activities in the direction of improved implementation of the law, after its endorcement.
