Summary/Abstract: The choice of quotations of words from different texts is extremely important for a proper construction of semantic definitions. Comparison of meanings and quotations of the above mentioned words, taken from historical and modern dictionaries, allows to draw the following conclusions. Changes of meanings observed in words, sometimes during a long course of time, should be always taken into consideration when making choice of fitting quotations. Axiologic (evaluative) choice of quotations is unavoidable because of the influence of ideology and history. Textual repetitions taken from older dictionaries should be restricted. Theoretical specification should concern the polysemy, synonymy and syntactic connections of words available in a given dictionary. One should also bear in mind the fact that the recipients of knowledge that is contained in dictionaries are very differentiated.
