Weather risk management in companies in Łódź region as an example of the construction industry. An analysis of available hedging instruments

Summary/Abstract: Research indicates that weather conditions have a significant impact on the revenues generated by the company. The question is if there is an instrument or a group of instruments that allow to protect the business against catastrophic and not catastrophic weather risk. The purpose of this article is to analyze the building industry businesses for the use of hedging weather instruments. To answer the research questions the study among 25 entities belonging to the construction industry in Łódź region using CAWI method was conducted. This study shows that companies belonging to the construction industry notice the problem of negative impact of weather conditions on conducted activities but do not take preventive actions. The main reason of their passivity is not knowing of available instruments and a conviction of weather inevitability. Moreover, the article analyses the market paying attention to the identification of available forms of protection of activities against weather risk.
