Summary/Abstract: Museums, galleries, art dealers, and even artists themselves contribute to institutionalization of art. We witness the process and cannot stop it. The only alternative is artistic ‘underground’, which develops in such places as Manhattan, New York. One of its elements are ‘community gardens’ organized on empty lots, which are left after burning of buildings. People buy those lots and they establish new infrastructure, which includes meeting space for artists. They bring sculpture, installations, and ceramics, which usually survive rain, snow and wind. At the corner of Avenue B and 6th Street, there is, for example, an interesting installation, which seems to be withstanding the elements. It is reminiscent of Russian Constructivist Style. Richard Stankiewicz and other artists follow the idea of assemblage. Jane Champion documented those gardens in a series of photographs.
