On the Role of Religion, Culture and Civilization in the International Relations

Summary/Abstract: Today in international relations, concepts such as religion, culture and civilization, which have both tangible and intangible dimesions, are gaining importance. This situation weakens the nation state which regards itself as the superior form of the life. The state-centered discipline of International Relations is also affected by this transformation. In this paper, the concepts of religion, culture and history will be analyzed within the framework of their relations to modernity and secularism. Then, the roles of these concepts in the theories of International Relations will be explained. Lastly, the underlying assumptions of the popular ideas of clash of civilizations and civilizational dialogue and the potential power of religious actors in both promoting and resolving conflicts, will be evaluated within the scope of the challenges and opportunities posed by globalization.
