The circular variation: the diachrony of Chilean voseo and the causes of its current distribution

Summary/Abstract: This paper departs from a parabolic model of diachronic variation, applicable to various linguistic phenomena of Spanish, among which one can include el voseo, that the upper class in Chile appropriates at fast pace. In order to prove the existence of this process, we will compare the data resulting from surveys used in 1972 and 2005, and propose the inclusion of the Chilean voseo in the parabolic model of diachronic variation.
