The former Polish-German border in consciousness of the inhabitants of Olesno Province and Kłobuck Province

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with problems of functioning of the former Polish-German border in consciousness of the inhabitants that, at present, is joint of the neighbouring cultural regions. The author shows dependences of such factors as, sense of consciousness and regional identity, the strength of social distance, stereotypical image of borderlands and their inhabitants and the intensity of marriages between the members of territorial groups that were examined. basing on surveys, it is indicated that the knowledge about the former border is deep-rooted in society. The research enables to got hold of correctness of perceiving the former border as a barrier and the strength of identification with the region of one’s own living. The verification of the empirical data research proves that it can be said that the former divisions are of partial permanence. The fact is proved in the spatial analysis of marriage affiliations. The author tries to identify the factors that influence on the lasting of the symbolic border in consciousness of the inhabitants.
