Summary/Abstract: The main goal of this paper is the analysis of the relation between the level of social security in chosen European countries and the propensity to save for retirement. The data for the analysis were taken from statistics databases of: OECD, Eurostat, World Bank and European Social Survey. The analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, correlations and taxonomic methods of classification. The output did not confirm the hypothesis that the higher level of social security was connected with a higher propensity to save. It turned out that the saving rates and the public pension expenses to private pension expenses ratio in more socially secure states were higher, and the citizens of less socially protective countries expected more state’s responsibility for the future pensions.
