Summary/Abstract: Genesis of the problem of Russia – the West some researchers have linked with, supposedly spread already in old Ruthenia hostility towards everything that was strange. They think that its origins were the consequences of Byzantium’s influences. In such circumstances, according to them, Ruthenia’s opposition to the West was born. The author of the article tries to compare stereotypical judgements on Russia’s hostility towards the West with the records of Old-Russian literature about the relations between Ruthenia and countries of Western Europe. At the same time, the article presents D. Lichaczow’s research where he showed the issue of Ruthenia – the West relations in different light. Too hasty conclusions about Russia lead, according to D. Lichaczow, to the fact that “the history of Russia still stays warped”. Trans. A. Gierba
