Quality of life improvement as an imperative of sustainable development

Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to evaluate what impact the implementation of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy has had on the quality of life. This problem is relevant today, as millions of people, also in Europe, are still experiencing the negative impacts of the economic crisis of 2008 in the form of deteriorating living and working conditions, increasing unemployment and dynamically growing income inequality. Therefore, any undertakings aimed at achieving the desired economic goals, taking into account all social and environmental aspects, deserve close attention. The paper analyses the concepts of quality of life and happiness, as well as the most commonly used quality of life indicators. Based on the reports prepared by international organizations, Eurostat and the European Commission an attempt has been made to assess the real impact of the realised development strategies on the welfare of citizens.
