Summary/Abstract: After the defeat in the Civil War, much of the Southerners chose exile from the United States. Many found a new home in Brazil, which offered them cultivated land, economic privilege and gratitude of the Emperor Pedro II. They brought with them new technologies and culture of the U.S. South. Initially heavily guarded their identity by creating a closed community. However, in the next decades in a natural way interfered with the Brazilian majority, and their identity has changed. Today, it is complex - the descendants of immigrants are fully or partially assimilated, but many of them maintains the old traditions and still identify as Southerners, even if they speak only Portuguese.
