Summary/Abstract: Changes in Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century are one of the most interesting processes of transformation in the history of the modern world. In a very short time reformers turned upside-down political, social and economic system of the country that for over 200 years of the Tokugawa shogunate seemed petrified. The impetus that started the reform was to force the opening of Japan by the Western powers. Fruits of changes were varied - the samurai class was destroyed (and to some extent its ideals), and ideal for the residents of the Land of the Flowering Cherry has become the love to the emperor and Japan. Article argues that nationalism formed by the Meiji rulers in the long run brought the Japanese war crimes in the years 1931-1945.
