Summary/Abstract: An increase of the retention capacity in a river basin can be achieved through the implementation of both technical measures as well as non-technical procedures. The paper examines the cost-effectiveness of technical and non-technical solutions which can be implemented within the catchment area of the Kania river. By using the indicator of the dynamic generation cost the conclusion has been drawn that the most optimal solution, that is least costly to society, is to enhance the retention capacity of the Kania river in the way of non-technical solutions, i.e. agricultural works. At the same time, this solution ensures achieving a comparable effect to that which would be achieved as a result of the reservoir construction.
