Seeds from Bulgaria in the Field of World Music

Summary/Abstract: The Bulgarian trace in World Music can be followed in several directions. Foreigners perform Bulgarian folkore in two ways: copying and free interpretation.The Bulgarian musical material, used as a raw material in the global pop music, is connected with the approach of folklorism and the philosophy and technology of collage. Such meetings of the local and the global, like for instance, the participation of the choir “Mysteries of Bulgarian voices”, trio “Bulgarka”, in projects of foreign stars (Kate Bush, Re Lema, “U 2”, and others) can be defined as a patch in the foreign musical collage. The mechanical inclusion of separate Bulgarian voices, songs and tunes in a new foreign work is of the same type as well. In both cases the arrangement absorbs the vocal original. The participation of Bulgarian master musicians in the industry of World Music is followed, too. It traces another type of presence - an active one, as well as another type of musical product - not a mechanical mixture, but a new synthesis. Observations on the musical meetings between the Bulgarian and the global also include the role of musicians from other ethnic groups (Ivo Papazov, Yildiz lbrahimova, etc.) as well as the interpretation of some ideologems and complexes in the attitude to this phenomenon.
