Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the problem of the relationship between literature and the widely understood sphere of human spirituality, its significance to social life and the issue of using culture as a tool of indoctrination in a totalitarian state. It shows how public discourse on Bulgakov’s novel reflected the mechanisms of collective life in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century; how the figures-symbols functioned as carriers of fundamental moral values; and what the importance of Christian ethics was, not only for the reception of the novel in Poland, but also for the formation of certain attitudes and beliefs. This reflection concerns the role of religious themes and philosophical topics not as stand-alone semantic elements, but as factors that provoked to seek answers to the existential questions of Polish society at those times.
