Summary/Abstract: In the years 2007-2008, there was a sharp increase in prices of agricultural commodities and food, which reached the levels not seen in several decades. This article tries to identify the main reasons for the strong increase in the prices of agri-food products in the second half of 2000 and to assess the significance of various factors affecting the price increases, both in the past decade, as well as in the future. The study, based on literature review and an analysis of FAO statistical data, indicates the complex causes of rising food prices, which include structural factors affecting the demand and/or supply of agri-food products, as well as short term price determinants.
