Summary/Abstract: The article presents basic definitions of the supply chain and supply chain security. Attention is paid to such threats as theft, piracy, smuggling, terrorism, including the intentional contamination of food. Against this background there are presented and discussed selected, the most important measures to protect cargo in the international trade, among others such as C-TPAT, TAPA, CSI, AEO and ISO 28000. The conclusions indicated that the risks associated with crime, and terrorism, including terrorism against agro-food sector may impede flows within international supply chains. They put at a loss not only logistics operator, but institutional clients and individual customers. Such events negatively translate into the loss of the image of the operator as a trustworthy entity. For this reason organizations that operate in the global or other supply chains seek the safety guarantee. The means for achieving this goal is the selection of certified suppliers, who have implemented and who are functioning in accordance with generally accepted and internationally recognized best practices of supply chain security. The conclusions of the article highlight the importance of certification in this area, the advantages of the solutions, as well as barriers related to possible costs arising from multiple assessments. It was also noted that the number of existing regulations and standards may obscure the meaning of their existence and undermine the legitimacy of the introduction. It may also contribute to the duplication of costs associated with the maintenance of individual certificates, similar to each other, in terms of requirements and privileges.
