Summary/Abstract: In this text, the author focuses on the early stage of construction of Yugoslav cultural remembrance from the perspective of literary criticism. The altered political system and ideological orientation in Yugoslavia following the World War II required a new cultural policy, but also a new collective remembrance, that is, its socialist interpretation. For that reason, particularly relevant is the issue relating to the manner in which works of the most important representatives of particular literatures (classics, such as Petar Petrović Njegoš) were adapted to suit the new socialist system of Yugoslav orientation. In the first part of the text, the author examines the theoretical problems of the construction of collective remembrance phenomenon, particularly its part that originates from the sphere of culture. The second part of the text is focused on the analysis of the Yugoslav literary criticism procedures and strategies of that period, which reinterpreted the most important 19th century authors in the spirit of the rhetoric of the new socialist system and freshly-ended National Liberation War.
