Summary/Abstract: The Bulgar-Slayer, the Cut-Nosed and the black dogs is a brief comparative study of two historical novels for adolescents – For the Sake of the Fatherland (1909) by Penelope Delta and Horsemen (1971) by Anastas Stoyanov. Independently of the fact that the books were written in the context of two ideologically different periods and give accounts of different historical time, both the Bulgarian and the Greek texts demonstrate remarkable similarities in their strategies to (re)construct the historical past and to build up a constant image of Otherness in the face of the enemy. United by a common purpose – to breed love for the Fatherland and national pride in the coming generation – the two texts mythologize history and shape the image of the Other in the fairy tale matrix of Good-and-Evil in a way that brings them close to each other and puts them in the focus of the current study.
