Summary/Abstract: In the interpretation of the ballad collection Sacrificial Pyres by Asen Razcvetnikov, tragic and balladic elements are connected to its sacrificial structure. Razcvetnikov relies on a number of various sacrificial models, some of them Biblical (Messianism of the Old and the Passion of the New Testament), while also evoking the rites of passage or funeral rites. Furthermore, the poetic subject also calls for his own martyr’s death, that is, a martyrly sacrificial fusion with the mythified people followed by the specific pathos of the return which had certain ideological and literary-programmatic implications at the time. Tragic elements in Raztsvetnikov’s ballad collection are connected to the moment of transgression throw in which the moral and the law are reflected. At the end, the deification of the man is achieved by the final image of double transgression – smashing of the iron door and repeated eating of the forbidden fruit.
