Summary/Abstract: The main goal of the article is to examine the behavior of entrepreneurs operating within their family companies, in particular, the analysis of how and in what instruments family-owned companies invest their financial surpluses. In order to meet the target, the author conducted his own analysis on a sample of 31 family-owned businesses. All subjects belong to the SME sector. The research is of quality nature, and the technique used to collect data was the interview technique. Partly structured questionnaire was the research tool. The obtained results indicate that family-owned companies operating in the SME sector are mostly interested in investing their financial surpluses in further development of their companies. Real estate investing, most often in the land for residential purposes, was ranked second. If they take advantage of investing in financial instruments, they choose mainly safe instruments, especially bank deposits.
