Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to highlight the need of implementing and developing an online counselling service in DDLUB, the Department for Distance Learning, University of Bucharest. Electronic platform is a set of communication services and e-Learning channels that improve the quality of information and can facilitate communication in education. Implementation and development of online counselling services in DDLUB has emerged as a need to improve teaching and provide quality services to students enrolled in the education system. In cyberspace, the general feeling is that nobody sees us, or that no one cares for us, but the reality is that, much like in real classroom, we are allowed to grow and to mature in terms of emotional and cognitive. Nowadays students are very busy people (some of them have one or more jobs) and they need not only knowledge of the theoretical/practical issues but also they need a new mentality and attitude. For this reason, the DDLUB tries to promote students' personal development to include 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, team work, time management and, why not, to become a good citizen. Easy access to information and effective communication through electronic platforms can increase the students' involvement in the educational process and may lead to professional and personal development of students. Online counselling is a new way to meet the needs of students, whose resources do not allow the in site presence, contributing to a real-time communication, answering questions and issues that these people may face during student life. The authors recommend to any institution that aims at developing distance education to consider counselling one of the keys to good results, especially for setting high professional standards.
