Summary/Abstract: The article offers a presentation of scholarship pursued at the end of the 20th century in the US on the methodology of the academic editing as well as – in a broader perspective – on the identity of critically analyzed text. The scope of the article covers the so-called social theory of text formulated in 1983-2000 by Jerome McGann, presented against the background of the editorial paradigm dominant at that time in the Anglo-American academic world, which McGann systematically criticized allowing for the formation of new models of editing (including digital editing), as well as integrating tools serving textual criticism and more generally, literary studies as such.
