Summary/Abstract: This study is focused on the issue of education in mother tongue in Romania during the interwar Period. Particularly we were interested in a case study – that of the Ukrainian minority living in the provinces Bukovina (former Austro-Hungarian possession) and Bessarabia (former Tsarist gubernia). Around 600.000 Ukrainians lived in Greater Romania, according to the 1930 official census, most of them in the countryside. We emphasized the challenges faced by these new Romanian citizens in the context of educational reforms in the interwar period. We were interested in all the three stages of the educational system – elementary schools, high schools, and universities. Also, we followed both the pupils’ and the teacher’s challenges and difficulties, the cultural policies of the different governments under different ideological programs, and the specific demands of the political Ukrainian elite. Finally we tried to find some answers to the following questions: what chances had the Ukrainians to integrate in the Romanian society? Were the minimal educational requests of Ukrainians satisfied? How important was the use of mother tongue in education?
