Summary/Abstract: The French Revolution had a major impact on the development of the modern educational system. The public universities, conceived and structured in the Age of Enlightenment were based on two pillars: economic and intellectual (Ken Robinson). This educational paradigm influenced on the modern educational system, made possible for it to grow and progress. This European model was later perfected in the United States, where the educational structure perfectly fits market needs. In the second part of this paper, we emphasized the limits of this educational paradigm. The limits of the economic and industrial paradigm can be seen through the fact that the technological advances can generate irrational social tendencies (Weimar Germany). The economic paradigm reduces the concept of knowledge to the notion of commodity, which give birth to knowledge inflation. On the other hand, intellectualism that characterizes higher education structure shows signs of elitism and isolationism - in contrast to the original concept of knowledge.
