Together and Apart: On Home Leisure

Summary/Abstract: The way in which Poles spend their free time is undergoing domestication. Although select varieties of participating in culture, practising various sports and enjoying entertainment offered by local institutions are the preferred forms of leisure, most members of society spend their free time within their own home. Watching TV and other passive forms of relaxation are the most widespread activities during free time. Using the space of home as a medium conducive to the strengthening and consolidation of the family around shared activities is not a common practice. This applies both to activities associated with running a household, and eating meals and spending free time together. Games engaging all members of the household hold significant potential in this respect. However, due to the individualised leisure preferences of household members, the sharing of fun activities at home is relatively rare in everyday family life.
