Keywords: words to express the concept „meat of domestic animal“; European Languages.

Summary/Abstract: Subject of the article are the names meaning "meat of domestic animal" in European languages. Two basic models are discovered: one-word model, with special words to express the concept (in English and in a number of Slavic languages), and a two component model in most other languages, where the term is marked with the word ‘meat’ and defi nition to it - a derivative of the name of relevant animal. While the Slavic one-word model is an ancient one, in English it is innovation that occurred after the Norman conquest of the island. In the Slavic world there are languages that relate to this or that type, along with a transitional area where the two models compete.
