Summary/Abstract: The European Parliament is one of the fundamental political institutions of the EU, which has gone through several stages of development inherent to the institutional development of the Union as a whole. The jurisdiction of the European Parliament includes legislative, financial, control and so-called other jurisdictions (protection of women's rights, consumer protection, environmental protection). The decision-making process in the European Union is often criticized for the limited powers of the European Parliament, reffered as a ,,democratic deficit“, because most of decisions, on the proposal of the European Commission, were adopted in the European Council, which has no full democratic legitimacy and legal acts adopted are directly applicable in the Member States. The European Parliament become equal with the Council in legislation, financial, election of the President of the Commission and control of institutions. The European Parliament elections (2014) have the importance for the improvement of the institutional organization, but also for the prospects of EU citizens.
