Summary/Abstract: The observed trends in the development of modern economies let us make a conclusion that presently the level of socio-economic development of countries or regions is conditioned by their innovation. In Polish reality the mezo-economic aspect is of particular importance. In the elaboration, a theoretical discussion about the economy based on knowledge and innovation in the context of regional development in Poland has been illustrated by the results of empirical studies that illustrate the current image of the regions
