Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the changes in the global cold supply chains resulting from the progressing containerization, which more and more prevails over conventional reefer fleet. For the past 20 years the international trade of perishable goods has been consistently increasing, in return causing a rapid growth of the maritime transport of the aforementioned cargo, which was dominated by specialized reefers for many years. The article analyses the maritime reefer transport market in terms of different cargo groups and shipping segments. Moreover, it highlights the dynamic development of the refrigerated container transport, which has dominated the market, leaving only 30 percent of shipments to conventional reefers. Advantages and disadvantages of both forms of transport of cool cargo are discussed. The shift in the business model of operators of such transport towards delivering specialized services in the cold supply chain is indicated further on in the article. The increasing importance of cold supply chains is pointed out and a new commodity-wise stage in the development of containerization is indicated.
