Against political absence: twenty-eight literary voices on Fukushima

Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses Japanese writers’ commentaries on the tragic events after the Tōhoku earthquake in March 2011 as published in the literary magazine Shinchō. In the context of politically steered hegemonic narratives (Mouffe, Laclau) as produced in the media by debates on various questions related with the crisis following the catastrophe, Kowalczyk argues, the Japanese artists’ pronouncements can be seen as a voice that counterbalances media discourse – a voice that makes itself heard in public in the name of the unheard (Rancière).
