Summary/Abstract: This essay explores the problem of exophonic writing in the works of Tawada Yōko, who writes in both German and Japanese. Kowalczyk defines exophonic writing and describes the formation of grammatical, philosophical and political subjectivity in writers who work in a non-native language. These writers must construct anew their symbolic capital, which determines their position within the system of world literature. Kowalczyk concludes by examining how Yōko’s understanding of exophony influences discourses on knowledge production, including literary scholarship.
