TECHNIQUES AND MEANS OF HANDLING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS

Summary/Abstract: Psychological operations are aimed at the human being, his/her mind, at groups of people from both the civilian population and the armed forces. Psychological operations are aimed at affecting the cognitive, affective and volitional processes, making changes to feelings and emotions, producing strong emotions and controlling the individual or collective will; all these take place at the deepest levels of the consciousness (they cannot be seen) and they materialize in effects (which are visible). Modern warfare includes the psychological operations in its course, because they can effect changes in attitudes and behaviours, so they represent a genuine force multiplier. The psychological operations make use of language, images and information to assault the mind, affect the morale and change the will, all these being aimed at defeating the enemy with as little losses as possible. Persuasion has a certain relation to manipulation.
