Summary/Abstract: This article aims to present a theoretical study on the role of a business model in building a company’s competitive advantage. In the introductory part, the author presents the view that a prerequisite of obtaining a competitive advantage is the ability to produce and provide customers with the products that are perceived by them as a source of prime value. Then he focuses on the factors which determine business competitiveness. This is followed by an attempt to define a business model and its basic components. The relationships between the various components of such a model are presented on an example taken from economic practice. In the author’s opinion, a business model illustrates the mechanism of creating and delivering value to a customer, which makes the model closely related to the process of building a competitive advantage. An important element of the structure are the resources used in the process of creating value – these constitute the company’s competitive potential.
