Summary/Abstract: Sceptics who perceive globalization as a threat to indigenous traditions and language are rarely heard in Italy, as the benefits of translation are welcomed with increasing enthusiasm and propagators of Weltliteratur emphasize the need to revise educational models. Debates on national culture and language are complicated by the fact that the concept of nation has not yet been freed from its historical rootedness in fascism, even though the “national” is already being contested, along with the distinction between indigenous and migrant literary production, by those who celebrate notions of planetary creolization and wish to include in the national canon literatures written by migrants. As also the notion of belonging is increasingly challenged, what are we defending when we try to defend locality?
