Summary/Abstract: In this article Mazurkiewicz examines “heroic” and “anti-heroic” versions of Polish masculinity in order to identify any elements that remained relatively stable across the entire nineteenth century. His interpretation of Mazurek Dąbrowskiego (the national anthem of Poland) leads him to uncover a continuous phantasmal matrix of Polish masculinity – a strong and lasting structure that is oppressive and traumatic and that marks the works of the Romantics, the Positivists and even the Modernists.s.
