Summary/Abstract: The official language spoken in modern Scotland in the standard English, but in what degree is the language of the Scots really standard? Lately, in the literary world of modern Scotland, there has been an aspiring need for accepting of the Scottish dialect of English as a separate language. One author who dared to write his novel in a manner reflecting this aspiration is Irvine Welsh. He places the spoken language of the Scots in his novels as an equivalent to the language spoken in the real Scottish life and thus draws a question of the Scottish language and its differences with English.
