THE FEMININE AND THE MASCULINE: EVOLVING MEANINGS IN COLLECTIVE AND INDIVIDUAL CONSCIENCE

Summary/Abstract: A human being, man or woman, is evolving in his or her own gender identity in tune with the evolution of the inside part of his or her psyche, the complementary gender. This paper outlines the stages that femininity and masculinity have undergone from prehistory up to the age of globalization, as represented in literature, visual arts and popular culture, using the conceptual framework provided by Jungian psychology. It includes comments on the consistency of the current developing stages of femininity and masculinity with the globalization challenges.
