Summary/Abstract: Romanian feminism has had a double-edged relationship with European Union’s policies and institutions: the European Union imposed policies concerning gender equality often proved beneficial, however Romanian feminists found themselves confronted with a shallow “room-service” state feminism. The article focuses on the interplay between Romanian feminism, the Romanian state and the European Union Romania became a member state of. The Romanian State is analyzed in terms of the distinct gender regime created and maintained through its policies, institutions and representatives, particularly relating to policies implemented after the financial crisis. In my article I aim to identify the main opportunities and challenges EU policy-making and the European/Romanian identities raise for the development of Romanian feminist strategies, taking into consideration the Romanian’s state gender approach and recent European developments (particularly the Lisbon Treaty) and focusing mainly on activism and policy-making.
