Summary/Abstract: Sudetes, the region located on the Polish-Czech-German borderland, obtained in the past a railway network of high density as the conditions of the mountain. The vast majority of cities and many villages had access to the railway. Railway were one of important factors, which led to the development of tourism. After the political transformation (in the 90s of the 20th century) the situation of railway in each of all countries is different. In the Czech Republic almost all railway lines were maintained. On the German side part of the lines have been closed but almost all towns have retained access to the railway. The situation is the worst in the Polish Sudetes. The total length of railway lines has been reduced by over 55%, almost 27% of urban population has no access to railway (including two district towns). Although the railways still have a great potential, but it is wasted because of mismanagement. The change of transport policy is necessary taking into account to a greater extent the role of railway in the Polish transport system.
