Summary/Abstract: August Šenoa inherited the model of the historical novel introduced into European literature by Sir Walter Scott. However, he modified it so as to fit into the specific circumstances prevailing in Croatian literary tradition. The essence of his approach is faithful reconstruction of historical events resulting from a meticulaus study of authentic documents and recognized historical sources. In Šenoa's novels history ceased to be a mere decoration, a background for the plot and assumed an active role in the novelistic world essential to the narrative progression. In the interpretation of August Šenoa the historical novel proved to be an ideal literary form in which private lives and personal experiences can coexist and directly correlate with national ambitions and ideologies, with ethical dilemmas and collective myths.
