Summary/Abstract: The exile has been a frequently approached subject in the Romanian literature in all its evolutionary stages, hence feeling uprooted became a leitmotif of the Romanian mentality. Domnica Rădulescu performs an unprecedented exploration of the tragic heroine from a feminist perspective. Train to Trieste is a thrilling, evocative story about a young woman’s passionate first love, her flight from her native country, and her struggle to make a new life alone in America. Mona the main character and narrator of the story is a credible character. She is 17, she falls in love with Mihai. Many of us know a 17 year old like Mona. She is full of love and believes Mihai is her one true love. It is very interesting to see how Mona’s experiences under the dictatorship affects her love for Mihai. But, at the same time, she grows up through her many hard life experiences, which those who grew up in America have never had to experience. Confronted with a self-crisis, Mona’s exile becomes her condition, torment and privilege at the same time, the torment of displacement and the privilege of a continuous initiation and knowledge which may be considered a form of liberty.
