Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is a description of character of the selected values and ethical standards supporting assumptions of the sustainable development and rural tourism. These values are primarily: man and standards governing the principles of humanity, social justice, family, inhabitants of rural areas, culture and nature. The study focuses on rural areas where tourist activity is developing in the framework of assumptions of sustainable development. The primary research method was the analysis of secondary materials (desk research), including subject domestic and foreign literature and report of results from nationwide empirical research carried out in rural areas in Poland in 2011. The article indicated that the base values and ethical standards referring to the business activity (also tourist) are included in the Manifesto of Global Economic Ethics and in the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. The contents of these documents are poorly known in the tourist and educational practice. In scientific research and didactics tourism cannot therefore be treated unilaterally/one-sidedly as a mainly economic phenomenon with omitting its ethical aspects.
