Summary/Abstract: his is a lecture given by a researcher who has been investigating companies throughout his whole professional career. In my investigation, all the interviewees participate in the scientific debate and the questions involved are questions that matter to them. I have tried to understand how a factory, a workshop, an office, is able to survive and grow. The survival of factories is linked to the mastering of the techniques and the economy of human management. I have observed successes and collapses. In cases of success, I have looked for underlying explanatory laws; failures have often confused me. My observations show that many executives and managers do not know what to do when everything goes wrong. Hence, my lecture aims to fill a gap in the teaching at business schools that teach management in view of corporate profitability, but do not teach managers how to protect themselves and others from the decisions they make. The first point attempts to show how decision making requires the autonomy of the manager. The second point shows that decisions are made when the management’s knowledge does not enable coping with a situation. The third point shows that, in cases of management failures, managers are more likely to make bad decisions and abandon their own morality. Finally, the paper ends with a plea for managers to use all the freedom of action they have.
