Summary/Abstract: The concepts, techniques, methods, materials and practices of conservation and restoration of historical monuments have known over time constant evolution, especially with the emergence of the consciousness of historical and artistic value of such material evidence of the past. If initially practices manifested at individual level, with time they were generalized and theorized, and subsequently gained a legal aspect. In 1931 the first Charter of the restoration of historical monuments was developed in the First International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments in Athens, the next Charter being drafted and adopted at the Second International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments of Venice, 1964. These European Charters formulated the basic principles of restoration of historical monuments, being complemented by subsequent documents.
